RSV from a TCM perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection through the lens of disharmony between the body’s vital substances (Zheng Qi) and external pathogens (邪气 – Xie Qi). The invasion of these pathogens disrupts the flow of vital energy (Qi) and disrupts the internal organs.

Here’s a breakdown of the pathogenic process of RSV infection according to TCM:

  1. Stage 1: Externalization (Wei Qi)
  • The first line of defense is the Wei Qi (卫气 – Wei Qi), the protective energy located at the body’s surface, including the skin, lungs, and respiratory tract.
  • During RSV infection, the external pathogens (風邪 -的风邪 – Feng Xie, often translated as “wind-evil”) invade the body, overwhelming the Wei Qi.
  1. Stage 2: Lung Involvement (Fei Yin)
  • If the Wei Qi is unable to defend against the external pathogens, the lungs (Fei 肺) become involved.
  • The pathogens can cause Lung Yin (肺阴 – Fei Yin) deficiency, characterized by symptoms like dry cough, sore throat, and fever.
  1. Stage 3: Phlegm Formation (Tan Yin)
  • As the infection progresses, the body produces Phlegm (痰 Yin – Tan Yin) to combat the pathogens. This phlegm can accumulate in the lungs and airways, leading to congestion, cough with phlegm, and difficulty breathing.
  1. Stage 4: Potential for Spleen/Stomach Disharmony
  • In some cases, the digestive system (Spleen and Stomach) can become involved. The illness can weaken the Spleen Qi (脾气 – Pi Qi), leading to dampness accumulation (Shi Yin 湿阴 – Shi Yin) and digestive issues like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

TCM Treatment for RSV

TCM treatment for RSV focuses on strengthening the body’s Zheng Qi (upright energy) to expel the Xie Qi (pathogenic factors). This may involve various modalities like herbal medicine, acupuncture, acupressure, and dietary therapy. The specific treatment plan will depend on the individual’s symptoms and the stage of the illness.

Always consult with a qualified TCM practitioner to determine the best treatment.
