L-carnitine is a nutrient that helps the body turn fat into energy. It is produced naturally in the body and can also be obtainedf from food, such as red meat, poultry, and fish. L-carnitine supplements are also popular among athletes and people who are trying to lose weight.

Effects on weight

Some research suggests that L-carnitine supplementation may help promote weight loss. For example, a review of 37 studies found that L-carnitine significantly reduced body weight, body mass index (BMI), and fat mass. However, it had no effect on belly fat or body fat percentage.

Another analysis of nine studies found that people lost an average of 2.9 pounds (lbs), or 1.3 kilograms (kg), more weight while taking L-carnitine.

Effects on heart health

L-carnitine may also have some benefits for heart health. For example, one review of 10 studies found that L-carnitine significantly reduced diastolic blood pressure, especially in people with overweight and obesity.

Another analysis of 17 studies showed that L-carnitine could improve heart function and decrease symptoms in people with congestive heart failure.

Additionally, a 2020 review showed that L-carnitine could reduce total and LDL (bad) cholesterol while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol in people at risk for heart disease.

Effects on health in general

L-carnitine is also important for other aspects of health, such as brain function, muscle movement, and fertility.

Some studies have suggested that L-carnitine may also help improve exercise performance and reduce muscle fatigue.

Safety and side effects

L-carnitine is generally considered safe for most people when taken in recommended doses. However, some people may experience side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

High doses of L-carnitine may also interact with certain medications, such as blood thinners and diabetes medications.
